People often think of collectors as millionaires living in mansions filled with priceless paintings and sculptures by Picasso, Rembrandt or Michelangelo. While it's true that collecting artwork from well-renown artists requires a great deal of money, people with small budgets can and do become successful collectors.
So, what is a collection?
Simply put, a collection is a group of objects or an amount of material accumulated in one location usually centered on common characteristics or purpose. Your collection can be the works of a single artist, like Jim Shore, or it can be an assortment of items based on a central theme. It can be different shapes or characters made from the same material such as jade carvings or porcelain and it can even comprise of commonplace items such as cookie jars, matchbooks or holiday ornaments.
How do I decide what to collect?
Take a look around your home. You may be surprised to find that you already have a mini collection made up of items you've acquired over time. You may have a passion for animals or sports and have a few figurines, pillows or pictures with your favorite team or breed of dog. Maybe people have given you gifts from their travels that you're especially fond of like souvenir mugs or hats. Or, you may have a number of interesting planters or tropical plants.
The internet is another great way to decide what to collect. Browse through online stores that carry collectibles, gifts or gadgets. Just remember, whether you begin a collection as an investment or just for fun, you should start with pieces that you enjoy!
